Punjab Approves Lifetime Pension for Widows of Government Employees

The Punjab government has approved a landmark decision to grant lifetime pensions to widows of government employees. This major move was made during the 28th provincial cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The initiative is aimed at supporting families of public servants who dedicated their lives to serving the province.

In another key announcement, rescue workers who were actively involved in flood relief operations will receive a one-time reward of Rs 50,000, recognizing their bravery and service during emergencies.

The cabinet also focused on education reforms. It approved official assessments for Grade 5 and Grade 8 students across the province. While fifth graders will go through a structured review process, eighth graders will appear for standardized exams to ensure academic consistency and quality.

In the energy sector, the cabinet gave the green light to a new digital system for submitting online applications to open petrol pumps. This step is expected to make the process faster, more transparent, and business-friendly.

The education sector also saw another major decision. The cabinet approved a plan to hire Vice Chancellors (VCs) from the open market, allowing for more transparency and competition. Applicants will need to score at least 80% marks to qualify, ensuring that only the most competent professionals lead the province’s universities.

Finally, the cabinet approved the allocation of Rs 2.6 billion to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) for flood relief operations, aimed at supporting affected communities and building disaster resilience. Dawn News
