Pakistan Launches First International Ferry Service to Iran and GCC

In a landmark decision, Pakistan’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs has officially approved the country’s first-ever international ferry service, opening new doors for sea-based travel and trade in the region.

The ferry licence has been granted to Sea Keepers, a private operator now authorized to run ferry routes between Pakistan, Iran, and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This major development marks a strategic shift in Pakistan’s transport sector, providing an affordable alternative to air travel. CNN Travel

The announcement came after a high-level meeting of the Licensing Committee, which includes representatives from the Ministries of Maritime Affairs, Defence, Foreign Affairs, and Interior, along with key officials from the shipping and logistics industry.

“This is a game-changer for Pakistan’s maritime sector,” said an official from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs. “The ferry service will boost connectivity, ease passenger travel, and promote regional trade through sea routes.”

🚢 A New Era of Sea Travel

The new ferry service is designed to support overseas workers, religious pilgrims, and other passengers who regularly travel between Pakistan and Gulf countries. By offering a cost-effective and reliable travel option, the initiative aims to ease the burden on airlines, especially for short-haul routes to Iran, UAE, and other GCC nations.

This move also complements Pakistan’s broader maritime strategy, which seeks to modernize infrastructure, expand port operations, and encourage private-sector participation in the shipping industry.

🔗 Boosting Regional Trade and Tourism

The ferry service is not just about passenger convenience—it also represents a significant step toward enhancing regional trade. Sea-based transportation is generally cheaper for bulk goods, and this new route could facilitate exports, logistics, and cross-border commerce between Pakistan and Middle Eastern nations.

Moreover, it may open new opportunities in religious tourism, especially for Zaireen (pilgrims) traveling to Iran, Iraq, and other sacred destinations via sea.

🧭 Future Outlook

With the licence awarded to Sea Keepers, Pakistan has officially entered the world of international ferry operations. Authorities believe this is just the beginning. More ferry operators are likely to follow as the government encourages private investment and regional connectivity under the Blue Economy vision.

The initiative reflects Pakistan’s commitment to leveraging its strategic coastal location, enhancing travel affordability, and reducing dependency on traditional air routes.

As the ferry routes launch in the near future, travellers and businesses alike can look forward to a safe, modern, and cost-effective mode of transport across the Arabian Sea. Wikipedia
