Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms Hit Across Pakistan

Heavy rains and loud thunderstorms are expected to lash many parts of Pakistan starting today, as a strong weather system moves into the region. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), areas in northern and central Pakistan are likely to see intense rainfall, loud thunder, and a high chance of urban flooding, especially in low-lying neighborhoods with poor drainage systems.

Cities across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Islamabad are likely to face the most serious impact. The PMD has warned of sudden downpours that may disrupt traffic, damage weak structures, and overwhelm existing sewerage systems. Local authorities have urged residents to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and take early precautions to protect their homes and families.

People living in flood-prone areas—such as those near rivers, drains, and streams—are advised to closely monitor rising water levels. Emergency services and rescue teams have already been put on high alert to respond quickly to any dangerous situations, including waterlogging, landslides, or blocked roads.

Residents are being asked to stay indoors during periods of heavy rain and secure any loose outdoor items like flower pots, umbrellas, and furniture that may be damaged or cause injury. Travelers are advised to check local weather updates before setting out, as visibility could drop and road conditions may become hazardous due to flooding or debris.

According to weather officials, rainfall is expected to continue for the next 48 to 72 hours, with the heaviest showers likely in the late evening and early morning hours. Some areas may also experience hailstorms, increasing the risk of damage to vehicles and crops.

Farmers and outdoor laborers have been specifically advised to reschedule or adjust their work to avoid getting caught in severe weather. The government has asked district administrations to keep relief equipment ready and ensure smooth functioning of drainage systems during the spell of rain.

The Meteorological Department has also warned that the situation may worsen if the current weather pattern strengthens. They’ve called on the media and digital platforms to help spread awareness about safety measures. People are urged to follow only official weather updates and not spread unverified rumors on social media, which could cause panic.

In recent years, urban flooding in cities like Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar has caused significant damage. Poor urban planning and blocked drains have made many cities vulnerable to even moderate rainfall. Authorities are now trying to tackle the issue more proactively.

While monsoon rains are crucial for agriculture, they can also pose serious risks to daily life and infrastructure if proper precautions are not taken. Citizens are reminded that early action saves lives, and even small steps—like clearing rooftops and checking for leaks—can make a big difference.
