Pakistan is taking a big step toward cleaner and more affordable transport. On August 14, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to officially launch a new scheme that will distribute 116,000 electric bikes across the country. This plan is part of the National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025–2030, which aims to reduce pollution and support green transport. Wikipedia
The electric bike scheme is designed to help the public switch from fuel-based bikes to eco-friendly vehicles. It will work through a two-year installment plan, making it easier for people to buy electric bikes. The government is working closely with the State Bank of Pakistan and the Bank Association to manage loans and financing. Each electric bike will get a Rs. 50,000 subsidy, and the remaining cost—around Rs. 200,000—can be paid in small monthly payments.
To apply, people must be between 18 and 65 years old. The full price of an electric bike is estimated at around Rs. 250,000, but thanks to the subsidy and installment plan, it will be much easier for people to afford one. This scheme is not just about reducing fuel costs. It also aims to cut carbon emissions, promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption, and provide affordable transport to people who depend on bikes and rickshaws every day.
Under the NEV Policy, the government wants to see 2.213 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030. To make that happen, Rs. 100 billion in subsidies will be given over the next five years. For the current year, Rs. 9 billion is already set aside. The subsidy will grow each year, reaching Rs. 26 billion by 2029.
In 2023, Pakistan had already spent Rs. 23 billion on similar programs. The new policy builds on that progress and takes things further. Also, 17 local companies have been given licenses to manufacture electric bikes, which will help create jobs and support the national goal of 30% EV adoption by 2030.
Special Focus on Women in Sindh
At the same time, the Sindh Government is planning a special scheme just for women. The Sindh Transport Department has asked for Rs. 300 million to give free electric bikes to women who travel to work. This program is meant to help women who face daily transport problems and will be a strong step toward women’s empowerment.
Officials say this money should be given as an extra budget, not from the usual funds, because it’s so important. If approved, this will be one of the most forward-thinking projects in the region, showing that women’s safety and mobility matter.
Toward a Greener and Smarter Future
The launch of the electric bike scheme is a major part of Pakistan’s plan to fight climate change and offer more affordable travel options. Whether it’s someone in a big city or a small village, these bikes will help reduce fuel costs and give people a better, cleaner way to move around.
With August 14 set as the announcement day, many people are excited to see how the scheme will work. The government’s focus on long-term EV growth, subsidies, and local production shows that Pakistan is ready for a cleaner and more high-tech future in transport. This is not just a plan—it’s a vision for a better, greener Pakistan.
